The Dirt Doc has numerous hands-on demonstrations that simulate actual fossil digs. We travel across the USA to bring rocks, sediment and fossils to you. These demonstrations include shark teeth digs that simulate both looking through sandbar sediments and sieving the bottom of streams for fossils. Students love getting dirty and wet then being able to take the shark teeth home with them. The simulated digs also include digging real bones buried in sediment and splitting rocks to find fossils. Students can also learn how to plaster-jacket fossils and make fossil cast.

Experience Our outdoor stream bed fossil dig

Experience what its like to wade in a stream and dig fossils from the streambed that you get to take home with you. You might get wet but kids of all ages will have fun learning how to dig and sieve for fossils.

Or Experience Our indoor stream bed fossil dig

Experience the excitement of sieving sediment from a stream that is known for having fossil shark teeth and keep what you find.

Find Shark Teeth in sandbar sediments

Imagine the challenge of walking along a sandbar and finding fossilized shark teeth and keep what you find. As we have learned the hard way, what you miss, the next person will find.

Split rocks to find hidden fossils inside

Its like opening a Christmas present, split a rock and see what you find inside.

Learn how to plaster-Jacket fossils

Large or delicate fossils found in the field need to be taken to the lab to be ‘prepped’ for display. Experience what its like to be a paleontologist trying to transport a delicate fossil to the lab. Learn how to plaster-jack a fossil or remove the plaster-jacket and clean the sediment from around the fossil.

Learn how to ‘prep’ fossils

Many fossils need to be cleaned up or ‘prepped’ for display. Experience what its like to be a paleontologist in the lab, delicately removing sediment from around a fossil.
