Question: Is Science and Faith compatible? Can I be a scientist and a Bible-believing Christian?

Yes you can be a scientist and a Bible-believing Christian; I am! However, it is generally proposed today that you simply cannot be a person of faith and a person of science. You can attend church, as most of the scientists I know and worked with do. But almost every scientist that I’ve met in my career were shocked when I told them that I believe in Creation. It would really blow their mind if they knew that almost every field of science, as seen in the table below, was founded by a person of faith; men and women that believed in God’s word and science. But scientists like these below that are credited for developing or “Fathering” a field of science do not include others that came later who were believers in God and the Bible that made significant contributions to these and other fields of science.

The previous list didn’t include some of the greatest scientists, like probably the greatest scientist of all time Sir Issac Newton, who wrote more theological publications than science publications. Sir Newton wrote “We account the scriptures of God to be most sublime philosophy. I find more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than in any profane history whatsoever.” It also did not include Michael Farraday who fully believed in the doctrine of his church which said “The Bible and it alone with nothing added to it nor taken away from it by man, is the sole and sufficient guide for each individual…Faith in divinity and work of Christ is the gift of God and the evidence of this faith is obedience to the commandments of Christ.”
James Dana, a Geologist and Zoologist, who was President of GSA and AAAS, testified that “The grand old Book of God still stands; and this old earth, the more its’ leaves are turned over and pondered, the more it will sustain and illustrate the sacred Word” The list of founders of disciplines of science also did not include Lord Kelvin who was a teenage prodigy that held 21 doctorate degrees. He was a devout Christian who strongly opposed Lyell’s uniformitarianism beliefs. Lord Kelvin testified that “With regard to the origin of life, science… positively affirms creative power.”
Below are two tables of other great scientists that were believers in the God of the Bible. But even these tables are by no means a complete list. It is just a chosen sample of scientists who believed in the God of the Bible. For instance, it does not include James Maxwell who Einstein called “the most profound and fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton.” Maxwell strongly opposed evolution and the French atheist Pierre-Simon LaPlace. Nor does it include John Herschel, one of the greatest Astronomers of all time having discovered over 500 nebulae. John Herschel said “All human discoveries seem to be made only for the purpose of confirming more and more strongly the truths come from on high and contained in the sacred writings.” It also does not include Samuel Morse, who built the 1st camera in America & made the world’s 1st photographic portrait. He is most known for inventing the Morse code and the telegraph. His first telegraph message was “What hath God wrought.”

I don’t know if my field of science, which is Soil Physics and Hydrology, was founded by a person of faith but I do know that it is very common to find a Soil Physicist who is a person of faith and science. I think this is because God is a God of order which enables the earth’s processes to be described by Laws or equations. A few years ago, one of the top Soil Physicists in the world, Dr. Bob Horton, wrote in our science society newsletter called CSA News that “I am now a person of faith and science, and I see no conflict between the two. I am thankful for God’s gift of creation, including a mind that can reason, analyze, choose, emote, explore, and believe.” He went on to say “If you are a person of faith and science, I advise you to find ways to integrate your faith into your work.”
As you can see from the list above, many of the greatest scientists in history were people of faith and the same is true today. The modern creation research and education movement began in the 1960s when a Princeton Seminary professor, John Whitcomb joined forces with the Head of Civil Engineering Dept. at Virginia Tech, Dr. Henry Morris. Through the early 1970s God started calling Men and Women of faith and Science into Creation Ministries all over the world. This included our International Director John Mackay who recruited Ken Ham to join him in creation ministry and together they led the development of the creation movement in Australia.
Today there are 1000’s of scientists who believe in the Bible and the creation account that cover literally every scientific discipline. Like the past, some of these are today’s world-wide leaders in cutting edge research such as the world’s leading Synthetic Organic Chemist, Dr. James Tour. Dr. Tour is a Professor of Materials Science and Nanoengineering at Rice University. He was named among “The 50 most Influential Scientist in the World Today” in 2014 and “Scientist of the Year” in 2013. He is a Fellow of the AAAS, which is the largest scientific society in the world and publishes the journal Science which is the most prestigious science journal in the world.
The fact is that almost every field of science was founded by a person of faith and this belief in the Bible and the creation account is still true today by scientific leaders in almost every disciple! How is this possible if evolution has proven the Bible’s creation account is false or that science and faith are mutually exclusive? It’s not possible because evolution has not been proven and certainly has not proven the Bible false. You can be a person of faith and science. Or as the Founder of Physical Astronomy, Johan Kepler said, “science is thinking God’s thoughts after Him.”
You can be a person of faith and a person of science and even be a defender of the creation account.
