First Leg of the Trip West

Digging Fossils in Kemmerer WY

In August of 2024, Glenn & Ruby set out with two friends, Marcia and Angie, for a 3 day drive to Kemmerer WY to dig fossils. One hour down the road the RV suddenly stopped running while we were traveling at 70 mph on the interstate. We called our Good Sam’s Roadside assistance but was denied service. So what should we do? We prayed and called a friend.

Over the next 3 days we went to 4 mechanic shops and broke down 3 times with two tows. Each time, we prayed and felt God telling us to keep going. The ladies kept reminding us that they felt God saying that they were to go on this trip with us and if God was telling us to go then we needed to keep going.

We got 6 miles from the exit off I-80 in WY for Kemmerer and the RV broke down again by the engine simply dying and us coasting off the road. We got a tow truck to come and were towed to a Ford dealership in Rock City then the next morning we were towed to a mechanic shop after the Ford dealer refused to work on it. We left the RV in Rock City WY with a mechanic, moved everything needed into a UHaul trailer and kept going with our Jeep pulling the trailer. When God calls you to do something, don’t lose heart, just keep pressing forward.

We made it to the only hotel with a room anywhere near Kemmerer. We got there and found it was a dump, literally the worst and scariest hotel I had ever seen including all my travels through undeveloped countries. But it was the only option. We checked in just in time for the electricity of the whole town to go out. Instead of getting discouraged we had a party praising God and next day went to dig fossils.

We found around 100 fossil fish, one rare stingray, lots of fossilized fish poop and several plant fossils in a limestone (ocean deposit) quarry. These fossils were supposedly buried over 50 million years ago with an annual deposition of 0.1 to 0.2 mm per year over a 5-million-year period. Given that the fish were around an inch thick when alive then you would have to believe that they laid dead for over 100 years without decomposing or being eaten just to be buried then remain in fresh condition for 1000s of more years till enough sediment was built up to squash them flat and cement the sediment into limestone. Ocean fish, buried with freshwater fish, land plants and land animals suggest a global flood. The sediment (limestone) without differential settling of different grains sizes between layers definitely suggest a global flood.

As you can see from the pictures, we had a beautiful blue-sky day for digging fossils. But as soon as our dig was over, the quarry closed because of a major rain and lightning storm. We loaded the Uhaul with our fossils in the rain and got out of there. Next day we drove to Yellowstone NP and had another beautiful blue-sky day of seeing Old-Faithful and hiking its basin. But as we were leaving it started storming.

Next stop was Escalante NP where we planned to hike to Zebra Slot canyon. It rained the day before but was a blue-sky day the day we hiked to and through the slot canyon. Only thing was, the slot canyon was filled with water and we had to hike/swim through water. It was scary and exciting. Next day we drove through a hail storm to Bryce Canyon. When we got there, the storm passed and we had a gorgeous blue-sky day of hiking in what Ruby and I feel is the most beautiful NP in America. Guess what happened when we went into the Visitors Center at the end of our hike? Yes, it began hailing. You get the pattern.

Ps 119:105 says “Your word is a lamp to my feet, And a light to my path.” Have you ever been out in the woods at night with an oil lamp? it literally only lights up enough to see a step or two ahead. It’s not like high beans on a car. God blessed us each step of our trip but each step required faith to keeping stepping. We choose to trust God in order to keep going one step at a time. Trust Jesus for your life because He is trust-worthy. He loves you so much He died on the cross for your sins and mine. He offers you eternal life if you trust Him alone for your salvation. See Romans 10 for more.
